Berlin (dpa) - The leaders of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group are pressing for a quick clarification of the Union's candidate for chancellor.

"We have a great interest in the whole thing going on quickly now," said the parliamentary group chairman Ralph Brinkhaus (CDU) on Sunday in Berlin before the start of a closed meeting of the group's executive board.

"I think we are one step further tonight."

CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt emphasized: "The time is ripe for us to make the decisions in the next two weeks."

The two possible candidates for chancellor - CDU boss Armin Laschet and his CSU colleague Markus Söder - also take part in the all-day retreat of the parliamentary group.

Brinkhaus said he knew that there was an expectation «that something would happen».

But first of all, it is a matter of talking to the two party leaders about “how the furrows can also be drawn into the future”.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), who will no longer run after 16 years in office, was also expected to attend the closed meeting.
