New York (AP) - After days of artificial ventilation after a heart attack, US rapper DMX died at the age of 50.

The musician was pronounced dead in a clinic north of New York on Friday, his family said.

"We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, by birth Earl Simmons, has passed away at the age of 50 at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side," said a statement about which several US media consistently reported.

DMX was rushed to hospital in early April after a heart attack and has been artificially kept alive in the intensive care unit since then.

Information on the reason for the attack was initially not made public.

The rapper became known in the 1990s with hits like “Party Up” and “Get At Me Dog”.
