Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The compulsory corona test will also apply to pupils in emergency care in schools in North Rhine-Westphalia from next week.

The Ministry of Education made this clear on Friday.

Students in grades 1 to 6 who take part in educational support programs at schools must therefore be tested.

With the exception of the final classes, most students in North Rhine-Westphalia must first study from home after the Easter break from Monday.

The Ministry of Education had initially ordered distance learning for a week.

Students in the high school and final classes who are in classroom lessons also have to be tested for the virus, it said.

For face-to-face operation, there is compulsory testing with two self-tests per week from Monday.

This applies to students, teachers and other school staff.

The school ministry rejected speculation that the decision to run distance teaching in the coming week was made due to a lack of testing facilities in the schools.

Even before the Easter break, 1.5 million self-tests were sent to all secondary schools for the tests scheduled for Monday.

These have been "ready for use for days" and will also be used for the final classes from Monday.

Another 5.5 million tests, especially for elementary and special schools, are or will be sent and will reach the schools by the end of this week.

The initial logistics problems have now been resolved.
