Düsseldorf (dpa) - Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) has recognized Prince Philip as a close partner of North Rhine-Westphalia and as a pioneer for nature and climate protection.

"North Rhine-Westphalia's 75-year history is based on the founding by Great Britain and the special commitment of our British friends for the young country," said Laschet on Friday in Düsseldorf.

"We therefore mourn in a special way with the British royal family, the more than 20,000 Britons in North Rhine-Westphalia and Great Britain for His Royal Highness Prince Philip", it says in a message.

"Prince Philip was a pioneer and passionate fighter for nature and climate protection - also in North Rhine-Westphalia," emphasized Laschet.

He was emphatically committed to the preservation of the Rheinaue Nature Park in Bonn.

His special merit in promoting sporting and charitable achievements of young people will carry his memory into future generations.

"The life of Prince Philip - born in Corfu, trained in Germany, worked in Great Britain and around the world - symbolizes the European roots of the United Kingdom."

Prince Philip visited North Rhine-Westphalia on November 4, 2004 together with the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Queen Elizabeth II, as part of a state visit.

In addition to discussions in the state parliament and with representatives of the city of Düsseldorf, Prince Philip also signed the guest book of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
