Hanover (dpa / lni) - Lower Saxony's Minister of Education, Grant Hendrik Tonne, defended the decision of the Conference of Education Ministers to hold the Abitur exams.

Rejection debates are completely out of place and are at the expense of young people, said the SPD politician on Thursday evening after the conference of ministers of education.

The conference participants agreed on a stable framework so that the exams are recognized across national borders.

These would take place under the highest hygiene and safety standards.

The high school graduates in Germany should take their exams by decision of the ministerial round this year despite the corona pandemic.

Tonne sees the country meanwhile on the right track with its corona test concept in schools.

"Science has confirmed that the test concept with two weekly tests is good and effective as an additional measure to make school safer."

The ministerial conference also stated that schools and education had to be secured even in the pandemic.

It does not go that the lockdown is interpreted by some only as daycare and school closings.

"Since the run-up to Christmas, the children and young people have made a significant contribution to reducing contact," said the Lower Saxony head of department.

The effects on children and families should be the focus of all decisions.

Tonne indicated that there could be a large funding program to compensate for learning delays.

There are also good talks with the federal government.

Such an extensive program would usefully complement the measures in Lower Saxony.
