Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The State Criminal Police Office warns of a scam in which SMS are used.

Fraudsters would send text messages on cell phones asking them to pick up the parcel.

On Thursday alone, well over 100 reports were received via the Rhineland-Palatinate police's online station, a spokeswoman said on Friday.

Numerous affected persons also reported to the praesidia who had received corresponding messages.

Since the scam is spreading nationwide and following a snowball principle, the number of those affected is increasing.

The SMS therefore contain a link.

If this is followed, the criminals can install malware on the cell phone, for example, or access data and send SMS messages on their own.

As a protection against so-called smishing, the police advise not to click on links from unknown senders and not to allow the installation of third-party apps on the smartphone.

Anyone who has already clicked on the link should switch their smartphone to flight mode and, if necessary, delete apps that have not been installed and inform the mobile phone provider.
