Papenburg (dpa / lni) - Construction work on a new cruise ship for the American Disney group has begun at the Meyer Werft in Papenburg.

As the shipyard and Disney Cruise Line announced, the keel-laying of the “Disney Wish” powered by liquefied natural gas took place on Thursday.

The ocean liner is expected to have 1,250 guest cabins and will go on its maiden voyage in summer 2022.

There was no information about the purchase price.

"We are pleased to have reached another milestone in the construction of the ship with the keel laying," the shipyard quoted its managing director Jan Meyer.

The keel is laid in the middle of a global corona-related industry crisis.

Last week, the major Japanese shipping company NYK ordered a luxury ship for 744 passengers.

With the industry at a standstill, there has been virtually no demand for new ships so far.

Meyer-Werft has slowed down its construction program and must, according to its own statements, save 1.25 billion euros.

Job cuts are being negotiated with the employees.

Including the order from Japan, Meyer-Werft has nine firm orders.

The new ship “Odyssey of the Seas” was delivered to the US shipping company Royal Caribbean last week in Bremerhaven.
