09 April 2021 Ukraine's potential accession to NATO would lead to a large-scale increase in tensions in the south-east of the country and irreversible consequences for the Ukrainian state.

This was reported in a briefing by the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"We took note of a statement by Ukrainian President Zelensky, who visited the Donbass yesterday and said that the country's membership of NATO would presumably help to end the conflict in the region. However, contrary to Kiev's expectations, the potential NATO membership will not only not bring peace to Ukraine but, on the contrary, will lead to a large-scale increase in tensions in the southeast, with possible irreversible consequences for the Ukrainian state ", he stressed.

"We ask the Kiev authorities once again to take a responsible approach and finally start implementing the obligations under the Minsk package of measures," added Zakarova, stressing that the situation in Donbass remains complicated and tends to get worse due to " warlike intentions of Kiev, still guided by the illusion that there could be a military solution to the conflict in the south-east of the country ".

"Troops and military equipment are being deployed in the region and the mobilization plans are being updated," he noted.

"The Ukrainian media are fomenting hysteria based on the Russian threat myth, claiming that Moscow plans to attack Ukraine in the near future. Kiev's western sponsors openly support most of the developments," Zakharova said.

Zelensky said on Tuesday that the only way to end the war in the Donbass is for Ukraine to join NATO.
