Hanover (dpa / lni) - In Lower Saxony, 1,027 new teachers were hired for the second half of the 2020/21 school year until mid-March.

That corresponds to almost 86 percent of the 1200 published positions, said the Ministry of Education in response to a request from the FDP in the state parliament.

Once again, more teachers were hired than left the service.

The share of lateral entrants is six percent.

The FDP described the new hires as inadequate.

"To have only filled 86 percent of the advertised positions is a bad testimony to the work of the state government," said FDP education politician Björn Försterling.

"The framework conditions for the teaching profession are simply not right in Lower Saxony, which starts with the pay for elementary, secondary and secondary school teachers."

Försterling also criticized the way teachers were seconded to other schools during the Corona crisis.

"It is generally to be welcomed that there are fewer secondments and thus fewer teachers who have to drive from one school to the next, in particular to protect against infection," he said.

If the students study in separate groups, the state government should try even more to avoid secondments altogether.

"At the very least, they should rely on the fact that the delegated lessons take place digitally where possible, so that the teachers are only physically present at one school," he demanded.
