Völklingen (dpa / lrs) - A 35-year-old driver was arrested slightly injured after a film-like chase with the police in Saarland.

The man had taken intoxicants and was driving without a driver's license on Wednesday afternoon, the police reported on Thursday.

When the 35-year-old saw a patrol car in downtown Völklingen, he accelerated and tried to escape, according to the police report.

During the chase in the direction of Großrosseln, about ten kilometers away, the man drove far too fast, overtook cars on the sidewalk and ignored several red lights.

Despite oncoming traffic, he drove in the middle between the lanes to shake off his pursuers.

He collided with a car, but continued his escape undeterred.

Shortly afterwards, his car crashed into an excavator parked on a forest path.

The man injured in the accidents left his badly damaged vehicle and was arrested a few meters away.

The police became aware of the 35-year-old after a call.

A caller said he was driving his car in Völklingen without a driver's license, reported a police spokesman.
