Regensburg (dpa / lby) - A 37-year-old man has to answer for the killing of his two eight and six-year-old children before the regional court of Regensburg.

The trial of the alleged perpetrator, a German Serb, begins today, charged with two murders.

The public prosecutor's office accuses the man of suffocating the children in order to make his partner, who is separated from him, feel guilty.

The woman lived with another man after the separation.

When the son and daughter stayed with their father in May 2020, he played a game for them according to the prosecution: He pretended to be a police officer who had to tie the children up with cable ties.

In this way, the man wanted to prevent the children from defending themselves against the killing.

He tied the boy by the hands and feet, the girl by the hands.

After that, the father is said to have pulled a bag over their heads, glued them together and also choked the children.

Both children suffocated.

The suspect had called an acquaintance last May who then feared he might want to harm himself and in turn alerted the police.

The officers found the children's bodies in the man's apartment in Schwarzach (Straubing-Bogen district).

The man turned himself in to the police station a few hours later.
