Wöbbelin / Güstrow (dpa / mv) - The asparagus season has started in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

As the first company in the northeast, the Denissen farm in Wöbbelin (Ludwigslust-Parchim district) started harvesting the coveted pole vegetables on Thursday.

The early start is only possible in the fields where the asparagus is also protected from the current night frosts by so-called foil tunnels, said farm owner Michaela Denissen.

According to her, 12 of the 65 hectares of asparagus cultivated area are equipped with such structures.

Other growers such as the Demmin asparagus and potato farm (Mecklenburg Lake District) or the company "Mecklenburger Fresh" in Tieplitz (Rostock district) are postponing the start of the harvest for a few days because of the current cold weather.
