Halle (dpa) - Due to the corona, the Handel Festival 2021 in Halle has been canceled.

"To our great regret, we now have to announce that all attempts have failed and that due to the recent pandemic development with the rapid increase in the number of infected people, it is not possible to hold the 2021 Handel Festival from May 28th to June 13th, 2021", declared the organizers in Halle on Thursday.

"The cancellation hits us emotionally and financially difficult, but it is inevitable and there is no alternative."

This is the second time in a row that the large, internationally recognized music festival is canceled.

The director of the Handel House Foundation and artistic director of the Handel Festival, Clemens Birnbaum, said he was convinced that it will only be possible to hold such internationally oriented major events again after a certain vaccination rate has been reached.

“This is also one reason why we are not thinking about postponing to late summer and holding small Handel Festival, because too often we have already planned and postponed events last year and this year, which we will postpone again later and finally still had to cancel. "

The organizers are now placing their hopes in the early summer of 2022 - then 100 years of the Handel Festival will be celebrated.

The composer Georg Friedrich Handel was born in Halle on February 23, 1685.

He lived mostly in London, where he also died on April 14, 1759.

To this day, Handel's “Fireworks Music” is played worldwide.

The church music piece “Messiah” is one of the famous works in the Baroque composer's rich opera and oratorio output.

Before the pandemic, tens of thousands of visitors and musicians from all over the world came to the classical music festival in Halle.
