Hamburg (dpa) - The philosopher and former Minister of State for Culture Julian Nida-Rümelin has pleaded for museums, operas and theaters to be opened despite the corona pandemic.

“Wherever the culture can be maintained with a minimum distance and masks and not jostling, (...) then of course we do it.

Please do that! ”Said Nida-Rümelin on Thursday at the online symposium“ Culture without a minimum distance ”from Stage Entertainment Germany.

If museums do not contribute to the infection process, it is not the wrong signal to reopen them.

The culture and all the related trades are a huge and very dynamic industry.

He therefore welcomes every step of the opening process.

Nida-Rümelin emphasized that incidence should no longer be the sole criterion for progress in combating pandemics.

Rather, the focus should be on hospital occupancies and deaths.

"These are the two relevant criteria that you have to keep in mind, not incidence," said Nida-Rümelin with a view to Israel, where hospital occupations and deaths have fallen sharply despite the sometimes high incidence with the vaccinations.

He was supported by the Hamburg virologist Prof. Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit, who confirmed Nida-Rümelin's theses.

“It takes culture in the pandemic.

That must be made possible. "

The corona pandemic must also be a wake-up call for "how we want to live in the future, how we deal with nature".

Much more needs to be done for health care and prevention.

"We are ready to invest billions of euros in armament for a war that may never take place."

But hardly any investments have been made in the prevention of pandemics so far.

With a view to possible room concepts for the reopening of theaters and museums, the physicist Prof. Christian Kähler from the Bundeswehr University in Munich said: Concert halls usually have good ventilation, "so you don't have to worry about ventilation problems there".

At most, there is a direct risk of infection between the guests.

There you can work with FFP2 masks, transparent protective walls or proof of a vaccination or a negative corona test, said the chair of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics.
