Wiesbaden (dpa) - The building authorities in Germany approved significantly more apartments at the beginning of 2021.

The number grew in January by 5.1 percent compared to the previous month to 27,654 units, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office.

This includes permits for new buildings as well as for construction work on existing buildings.

The authorities approved 23,822 apartments in newly built residential buildings alone.

That was 6.8 percent more than in the previous month.

The number of permits for single-family houses (plus 9.3 percent) and two-family houses (plus 5.7 percent) rose significantly.

In contrast, there was a slight decrease of 0.4 percent for apartment buildings.

The permits are an important indicator of housing construction and thus also the fight against the housing shortage, especially in cities.

Some apartments are approved but not yet built, for example because craftsmen and construction companies are overloaded in the real estate boom.
