To a large extent, the inventory is about the spring swimming mosquito - one whose eggs only hatch if there is a flood.

If it is instead a dry spring, the eggs are waiting for hatching until next year.

- Since it is specifically these flood mosquitoes we are interested in, we will take soil samples, says Anders Lindström at the Swedish Veterinary Institute.

Fight the species early

Two years ago, in 2019, Lindström was on site on northern Gotland and investigated the presence of spring swimming mosquitoes.

Then a fishing gear was used that collected live mosquitoes, but now they want to investigate the soil where the eggs hatch.

The idea is to learn more about where the eggs are, so that it is possible to fight the species early if needed.

- For an area that is dependent on tourism, it can be worrying to have too many mosquitoes, Lindström says.

It is unclear how the mosquito found its way to Gotland

The current species in particular has previously caused a lot of problems in the area around the lower Dalälven river.

While ordinary forest mosquitoes circle for a while before they bite, the spring swimming mosquito attacks immediately.

How the spring swimming mosquito got to Gotland is still unclear.

Other types of mosquitoes, which are found on Gotland, will also be examined during the year.
