The municipality of Jönköping has fought to keep the letters of privilege in the city archives because it was considered that the letters of privilege are part of the local history.

The privilege letter for Jönköping was issued in 1284 by Magnus Ladulås and is the country's oldest privilege letter.

It has, together with the privilege letter for Gränna issued in 1652, always been kept in Jönköping's city archives.

However, the National Archives considered that it should be stored with similar documents in the National Archives in Vadstena, something that the Stockholm District Court ruled in their favor.

Jönköping District Court has decided not to appeal the district court ruling, therefore the letters will be moved to Vadstena.

Instead, copies will be made that those interested can view in the city archives.

In the clip above, the chair of the municipal board, Ann-Marie Nilsson (C), explains why they are not continuing the fight for the letters
