Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - After brilliant annual figures, the medical device manufacturer Gerresheimer wants to provide information on the course of business in the first quarter of 2021 this Thursday.

The company with around 10,000 employees has benefited in part from the consequences of the corona pandemic - the need for vaccine vials has gone through the roof, with Schott from Mainz and Stevanato from Italy, Gerresheimer is one of the world's largest producers of vaccine vials.

By the end of 2022, the company plans to deliver around a billion such containers for corona vaccinations to various pharmaceutical companies.

Gerresheimer manufactures the corona vaccine vials for the European market in Chalon (France) and in Boleslawiec (Poland).

The containers are also manufactured in Bünde in East Westphalia, but these structurally identical products are used, among other things, for packaging cancer drugs and special biotech preparations.

The former beer bottle manufacturer with a long-closed glassworks in Düsseldorf has specialized in medical products, including glass syringes.

The glass and plastic packaging is used for cough syrups, eye drops, nasal sprays, asthma inhalers and as insulin pens - and also for vaccines.

In 2020, consolidated sales rose slightly to 1.4 billion euros, while net profit climbed 7.2 percent to 89.9 million euros.

The fourth quarter of 2020 in particular was strong.
