Berlin (dpa) - The states are discussing how to proceed at the schools.

In nine of the 16 federal states, the Easter holidays come to an end on Sunday and the states plan differently.

In some federal states, the holidays have already ended.

In Saxony-Anhalt and Rhineland-Palatinate lessons are again, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saarland it begins this Thursday.

Hamburg did not have an Easter break, and the holidays in Hesse and Schleswig-Holstein will last until the end of next week.

The conversation between the ministers of education also serves to prepare for the next corona crisis summit between the state ministers and Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) on Monday, the conference of ministers of education said in advance.

Surprising decisions for a uniform approach or nationwide school closings are not on the horizon, because many federal states have long made plans for their schools.

Teachers and families had to be informed in good time before the end of the holiday.

In principle, the federal states themselves decide on school issues.

The German Society for Child and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ) called for schools and kindergartens to be kept open as long as possible.

The education ministers of the federal states, with reference to the right to education and the necessary social contacts of children and young people, have repeatedly spoken out in favor of maintaining lessons in schools as much as possible.

The German Teachers' Association advocated that local authorities, health authorities and school authorities should decide, depending on the local situation, whether there should be more face-to-face lessons or school at home again.

THE CURRENT STATUS

In February, after weeks of closings, primary school students in Germany returned to the facilities

.

Graduating classes have also been receiving lessons in school for a long time.

The years in between came back step by step in March - mostly in divided groups with so-called alternating lessons.

However, the return process was not yet completed everywhere before Easter.

Some students haven't been to their school since December.

HOW IT WILL CONTINUE NOW

Against the background of the corona situation, the return is now partially stalled.

Brandenburg, for example, first sends older pupils above elementary school back to “distance learning”.

In Baden-Württemberg, even elementary school students have to stay at home after the holidays.

Elsewhere, on the other hand, the previous alternating operation continues, but with different rules.

In Bavaria, schools generally switch back from face-to-face to distance learning when the incidence value reaches 100 in a city or district.

Hamburg only does this if the value is over 200 on three consecutive days.

After the Easter break, Saxony is saying goodbye to the link to the much-discussed incidence value and is keeping schools and daycare centers open regardless of this.

TEST TWICE - MANDATORY OR NOT

Millions of simple quick tests have been procured for schools in the past few weeks.

After everything that can be heard, there is no longer a deficiency.

In the future, students and teachers should test themselves twice a week if possible.

The countries also implement this differently: Most of them now prescribe tests for participation in face-to-face lessons.

Others, such as Hessen or Rhineland-Palatinate, rely on voluntariness.

Depending on the federal state, the tests are either taken home or tested together at school.

The self-tests are not as accurate as PCR tests, but the hope is that they will detect at least some of those who have become infected.

“Break chains of infection” is the keyword.

VACCINATIONS FOR TEACHERS

Many primary school teachers are now likely to have been vaccinated at least once after they have been taken to the front in the nationwide vaccination sequence.

There are also federal states that offer higher-grade teachers a vaccination.

Nationwide, however, they are even further behind in the vaccination sequence.

As long as not all teachers are vaccinated, lessons in schools with an incidence of 50 or more may only take place alternately, demanded the chairman of the Association for Education, Udo Beckmann, before the ministers of education consulted.

Keeping schools open regardless of incidence, as planned in Saxony, he called "irresponsible".

NO EXAMS CANCELED

The Education and Science Union (GEW) had called for the Abitur exams to be canceled this year if necessary because of the pandemic.

According to the current status, this should not happen.

The ministers of education are likely to reaffirm this.

They had already agreed in January that final exams at schools and vocational schools should also take place in this Corona school year.

The degrees should also be worth as much as those of other years and be mutually recognized by all federal states.

It is pointed out that this also worked out last spring despite closed schools.

Rhineland-Palatinate has also already passed its Abi exams.

Preparations are underway in the other countries, taking into account the special conditions.

Some of the exam dates have been postponed in order to gain time.

Examination requirements have also been relaxed in light of the situation and there is more time for written exams.
