  • Collective composters and voluntary supply terminals for organic waste will multiply in the coming years at the foot of buildings and in neighborhoods.

  • The Métropole de Lyon wishes to develop the practice of composting in city centers, by offering this service as close as possible to residents, but also by helping residents with a garden to take the plunge.

The practice is clearly on the rise among residents concerned with taking action in favor of the environment.

Even more in these confined times when any occupation in the garden is good to take.

But for those who are not fortunate enough to have a house and even less green spaces, composting in urban areas remains difficult to access.

The Lyon metropolis is no exception to this trend even if in recent years, under the impetus of local authorities, associations and groups of local residents, collective composting sites have flourished in certain municipalities and neighborhoods.

Eight months after the arrival of the ecologists at the head of the Metropolis, it is therefore not surprising to see elected officials take up this subject on which much remains to be done to democratize the recycling of bio-waste.

“Today, 27% of gray trash is food waste.

We have a big lever to reduce this waste composed of water which ends up incinerated, ”

Isabelle Petiot, vice-president of the Metropolis in charge of waste reduction and treatment

, explains to

.

It is her mission in particular to "change the scale" in the practice of composting.

With a well-defined goal.

“Whether in their garden or in collective housing, everyone must have solutions to recycle their food waste”.

Voluntary supply terminals in the 7th

To get closer to this objective, the Metropolis has decided to speed up the installation of neighborhood composters and at the foot of buildings.

To date, there are 500 collective composters of this type, financed by the Metropolis, and benefiting approximately 60,000 inhabitants.

"We have noticed a strong appetite for these devices", specifies Isabelle Petiot, whose ambition is to reach 1,500 collective composters installed by the end of the mandate.

In addition, voluntary supply terminals for organic waste will flourish in the agglomeration in densely populated areas.

From September, an experiment will be carried out throughout the 7th arrondissement.

The waste brought in by local residents will then be transferred to composting platforms.

"This will generate the creation of local jobs to pre-sort the contributions of the inhabitants and then manage the composting", adds the vice-president.

Once the full-scale test has been carried out in Lyon, terminals should be deployed from 2022 in East and West Lyon, "for coverage of all towns and town centers by the end of 2023", assures the Metropolis. , which has planned to invest 5 million euros in the creation of 1,500 to 2,000 collection points.

Training sessions

Individuals benefiting from a garden will not be forgotten.

The community also plans to help them take the plunge.

From July, 20,000 individual composters will be provided free of charge to these residents, after registration on the Toodego platform.

Composting training is also offered free of charge to those who wish to transform their bio-waste into natural fertilizers for the land.

A real environmental issue, enshrined in French regulations, which provides that "all citizens can have a solution for sorting their waste at source before 2024", recalls the Metropolis, which sees in this obligation "an essential gesture for the environment ".

“This is a real positive gesture in the fight against greenhouse gases.

There is a big stake to push to return to the ground since the compost has a capacity of CO2 capture ”, underlines Isabelle Petiot, convinced of the expectations of the population in this matter.

The waiting lists observed in certain districts for collective composters seem to prove him right ...
