The president of Argentina,

Alberto Fernández,

announced on Wednesday new restrictions on various activities and the movement of people to face the second wave of covid-19 in the country, where the cases of the new coronavirus have been record high today.

"We are going to redouble our care," Fernández said in a message recorded from the gardens of the presidential residence in Olivos, where he has been isolated since last Friday, after being diagnosed with covid-19.

The new restrictions, which will be in effect from next Friday until April 30, include a

curfew

between 00:00 and 06:00.

In addition, in areas with the highest epidemiological and sanitary risk,

social activities in private homes

are

suspended

;

social gatherings in public outdoor spaces with more than twenty people, and the recreational practice of any sport in closed places with more than ten people.

Likewise, the activity of

casinos, bingo halls, discos and party halls

is suspended

,

while bars and restaurants must close at 23 hours.

In Buenos Aires and its populous periphery, public transport will be restricted to

essential workers and students and teachers,

while throughout the country student and tourist group trips will be suspended.

GROWING SECOND WAVE

"Argentina has entered the second wave," warned Fernández, who lamented the "social relaxation" observed in recent weeks, with

parties and meetings during the Holy Week holidays

"contradicting all the recommended protocols."

"The pandemic continues. It is returning with more rigor. In recent weeks the number of cases has increased steadily in many areas of the country.

Only in the last seven days the cases increased by 36%

throughout the Argentine territory and by 53 % in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires, "he said.

Infections rose to

22,039

this Wednesday

, a record since the start of the pandemic,

while 199 people died in the last 24 hours.

POLITICAL DISCUSSION

The measures announced this Wednesday represent the

first reversal that Argentina has taken

since in the middle of last year it began to relax the harsh sanitary restrictions that it had imposed in March 2020.

Opposition sectors had expressed in the last hours their refusal to new restrictions, to which Fernández said today that the "universal catastrophe" of the pandemic cannot become a "miserable political dispute."

"As president, I have the political responsibility to take the reins and continue leading the country. But in these circumstances, my human condition prevails, which forces me to take care of the life and health of Argentines first of all," said the president, who called for a "rigorous control" of the new measures in each jurisdiction.
