Wiesbaden (dpa) - The corona crisis put a significant strain on public budgets in 2020 and caused the highest funding deficit since reunification.

The total public budget increased by 12.1 percent to 1678.6 billion euros compared to 2019, according to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden.

At the same time, the income fell by 3.5 percent to 1,489.4 billion euros.

This results in a funding deficit of 189.2 billion euros.

"This result clearly shows the consequences of the Corona crisis for public budgets," it said.

According to the information, it is the first deficit in seven years.

In 2019, a surplus of 45.2 billion euros had been achieved.
