Bremerhaven / Hamburg (dpa) - The Hamburg museum ship "Cap San Diego" returns to the Hanseatic city after almost four weeks in the shipyard on Saturday, completely overhauled and with a fresh ship's MOT.
The almost 60-year-old landmark will undock on Thursday afternoon in Bremerhaven and await Saturday morning at its berth at the Überseebrücke, announced the non-profit Cap San Diego operating company in Hamburg on Wednesday.
The "Cap San Diego" moored at the Bredo Dry Docks shipyard in mid-March and was subjected to a kind of ship inspection there in the dry dock of the class that is due every five years.
More than 200 points were processed.
In the center were the tanks and the chain case, which were cleaned, measured and preserved.
There was also work on the engine, in the stern tube and on deck.
Furthermore, the entire outer skin of the ship had been repainted with 2200 liters of paint.
According to the information, half of the costs of around 1.4 million euros came from funds from the federal monument protection program and the other half from funds from the ship owner, the Hamburg Admiralty Foundation.

The "Cap San Diego" was put into service in 1962 and went to South America for the Hamburg Süd shipping company.
It has served as a museum and hotel since 2003, but is still seaworthy and sails out to the North or Baltic Sea several times a year with up to 500 passengers.
Due to the corona pandemic, the ship cannot currently be viewed.
