Schwerin / Alt Tellin (dpa) - The major fire in the huge pig breeding facility Alt Tellin (Vorpommern-Greifswald), in which more than 55,000 animals were killed, could soon also occupy the Schwerin state parliament.

As a spokeswoman for the left parliamentary group said in Schwerin on Wednesday, the agricultural committee and state parliament should deal with the issue.

The aim is for the state government to be commissioned to no longer permit such systems.

For the Alt Tellin plant, the left's agricultural policy spokesman in the state parliament, Wolfgang Weiß, also wants to have the operating license that was issued about ten years ago be revoked.

The Alt Tellin pig breeding facility caught fire on March 30th.

According to the police, the reason for this is still unclear.

Despite the deployment of 75 firefighters, the stables could no longer be saved.

Two employees were slightly injured.

According to the operator, there were around 7,000 sows and 50,000 piglets in the facility, which was counted among the largest pig rearing facilities in Germany.

In total, only about 1300 animals could be saved.

Regardless of the criticism from environmental and animal welfare associations, the operator stated that the Alt Tellin facility had "always been operated in compliance with the legal framework and an existing fire protection regulation".
