Erfurt / Suhl (dpa / th) - The nomination planned for April 16 in southern Thuringia for the head of the President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maaßen, as a candidate for the CDU in the Bundestag, has been postponed.

However, it is still planned for April.

A possible date is April 23, it was said on Wednesday before a meeting between CDU state chief Christian Hirte and representatives of four South Thuringian district associations in Suhl.

The district association Schmalkalden-Meiningen had proposed Maaßen as a direct candidate for the Bundestag and thus not only caused controversial reactions in the CDU.

The federal government's commissioner for the east, Marco Wanderwitz, had criticized the plans.

"From my point of view, Mr. Maassen has long been incompatible with the Christian Democratic Union in terms of style and content," said Wanderwitz, who sits in the Bundestag for the Saxon CDU.

At the request of the dpa, Maaßen had confirmed that he wanted to run for constituency 196 in southern Thuringia.

The constituency, which is considered to be particularly conservative, is free after the local candidate Mark Hauptmann left the CDU in the course of the mask affair.

The meeting of Hirte with district leaders and delegates serve to discuss the situation, said CDU General Secretary Christian Herrgott on request.

Ultimately, the decision as to who is nominated lies with the district associations and their delegates.

"We are not a central government party."

However, the state executive expects from every candidate who is nominated in Thuringia for the state or federal elections on September 26, "a clear demarcation from the AfD."

Landeschef Hirte tweeted a few days ago: “I don't share many points of view and the style of Maaßen.

For the CDU Thuringia one thing is certain: Politics for Thuringia without AfD and the left! "

In the South Thuringian CDU it was said that it was still open whether there might be one or more competitors to measure up in the candidate list.
