The mayor of Bilbao
Juan María Aburto
(Bilbao, 1961) will undergo surgery in the coming weeks for a tumor in the duodenum that he himself announced on Twitter during the celebration of International Health Day.
"A hard blow", as Aburto has recognized, who has
already suffered two similar operations in 2008 and in 2014.
Aburto also needed a recovery period after
undergoing surgery on his hip
with the placement of a prosthesis in November 2020.
Amaia Arregi
(PNV) councilor responsible for Citizen Security will be the acting mayor.
"I am leaving the City Council temporarily,"
said Aburto in a short video in which he confirmed that this turmo was detected during a routine control a few weeks ago.
Since then, it has maintained its institutional agenda and organized the distribution of tasks in the
Governing Board that it shares with the PSE-EE
.
The first intervention to also remove a
small tumor
was carried out in 2008 and, six years later and as Employment Counselor, he was again subjected to a similar intervention.
Aburto has dismissed his message with a football joke
reminding Athletic "that you owe me a Cup"
after the final played with Real last Saturday and ten days before the one they will play against FC Barcelona again in Seville.
Juan Mari Aburto was
appointed mayor of Bilbao in June 2015
assuming the witness left by
Iñaki Azkuna who, after a long illness, died in March 2014
.
Aburto is an official of the Diputación de Bizkaia and his political career began in the early 1990s within the Basque Government in the Department of the Interior.
Later, he returned to Bizkaia to take over the Social Action area from 2003 on.
He was also a
deputy for the Presidency with José Luis Bilbao
and the Lehendakari Urkullu claimed him to take over the Department of Employment and Social Policies in December 2012.
