Uhyst (dpa / sn) - The escape of a suspected car thief ended on Wednesday night in a pond near Uhyst (Görlitz district).

Police took the hypothermic 24-year-old from the water into which he had fled, the police said.

Previously, the alleged car cracker had already driven into the pond after a rapid escape with the stolen vehicle.

This was preceded by a long chase with the police.

According to the police, a man from Ottendorf-Okrilla heard his car drive away from his property.

The officers deployed by the state and federal police, who were also supported by a helicopter, finally discovered the vehicle in Uhyst on the Spree and started the pursuit, which ended for the fugitive in the pond.

However, he was initially able to escape on foot.

During the search for the man, the police finally became aware of ducks, which had apparently been startled by the fugitive.

They also heard noises coming from the vibrating alarm on the man's phone.

The crew of the helicopter finally spotted the 24-year-old in the water about 20 meters from the shore.

The drugged man was taken to a hospital for examination.

Rescue workers also took care of two police officers who arrested the suspect in the cold water.
