According to the DAK-Gesundheit, sick leave due to psychological problems has reached a peak among women in Hamburg.

Last year, for every 100 insured persons, 401 days of absence with such a diagnosis were reported, the health insurance company said.

That is 37 percent more than ten years ago.

In 2020, women would have had almost twice as many days off as men due to mental illness.

While the shorter sick leave decreased by up to two weeks, the longer downtime over two weeks would have increased.

On average, the women and men affected were on sick leave for 43 days due to mental illness.

According to the DAK, depression most often led to sick leave.

They caused 128 days of absence per 100 insured persons.

The so-called adjustment disorders increased by around 14 percent and were responsible for 63 days of absence per 100 insured persons.

An adjustment disorder refers to serious changes in the mood or social behavior that can occur after a bereavement or another stressful life event.

DAK-Gesundheit sees the increase in mental illnesses in connection with the corona pandemic.

"Our current analysis shows how women in our city with mental health problems are suffering from the pandemic restrictions and stress," said the head of the DAK Health, Katrin Schmieder.

For the analysis, the Berlin Iges Institute evaluated the data from almost 76,000 employees insured with the health insurance fund in Hamburg.

With 5.6 million insured persons, including around 265,000 in Hamburg, DAK-Gesundheit is, according to its own information, the third largest German health insurance company in Germany.
