Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - The Frankfurt Zoo is happy about an anniversary breeding success with the kiwifruit from New Zealand.

As a zoo spokeswoman reported on Wednesday, the 50th kiwi chick hatched since 1978 at the end of March.

It was successfully hatched by father Kelsey and spent its first days with adult birds.

The sex of the chick with the still dark plumage is not yet known.

Only the examination of a feather sample in the laboratory will clarify in a few weeks whether it is a male or female chick, it said.

Kiwi chick number 49 hatched at the beginning of March.

Zoo visitors currently have no chance to take a look at the anniversary chick.

Due to the corona pandemic, all animal houses in the zoo and thus also the kiwi information center have to remain closed.

The first kiwis came to Frankfurt in 1978 as a gift from the New Zealand government.

The flightless and nocturnal birds are the heraldic bird of New Zealand and are considered threatened.

The anniversary kiwi should quickly become independent: On average, kiwi young only stay five to ten days in the den and near their father, explained the zoo spokeswoman.

After hatching, the chicks are already able to look after themselves.

"Apart from warmth, they get nothing from their fathers."

The females have nothing to do with the rearing of the young birds.

After you have placed your enormous egg in the nest, you can recover from the energy-sapping phase of egg development.
