Anklam / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The city of Anklam (Vorpommern-Greifswald) can finish building its new swimming pool with a hefty million aid from the state.

As the Schwerin building ministry announced on Wednesday, the city on the Peene will receive around ten million euros, which is 90 percent of the total costs.

The corresponding notification will be handed over to the state building minister Christian level (SPD) this Thursday.

The new hall, which should be ready by the end of 2021, is a low-energy pool with eight lanes in a 25-meter pool.

The construction replaces a swimming pool from GDR times in need of renovation and was started in May 2020.

Anklam will receive a state-of-the-art swimming pool for swimming lessons, club and recreational sports with significantly more water than in the old hall, said the building ministry.

A lifting floor is also installed in the pool.

The total costs are around eleven million euros.

As a medium-sized center south of Greifswald, the Hanseatic city has around 12,000 inhabitants, has been extensively modernized and restored in recent years and is located on federal road 109, which leads to the holiday island of Usedom.

Cities such as Neubrandenburg, Neustrelitz and Waren an der Müritz are also currently planning swimming pools.

The implementation has so far failed due to high follow-up costs.
