After the first five months of hearings, during which Zaki's detention was renewed fortnightly, the young Egyptian student's case has now entered the 45-day extension phase.

His health conditions have worsened in these weeks of detention.

Zaki suffers from asthma and allergies, and his body begins to suffer heavily from the psychological stress caused by imprisonment.

Zaki has been detained in Egypt since February 7, 2020, the day he was picked up by Egyptian National Security agents at Cairo airport on his way back from Bologna.

The researcher, a human rights activist, who attended a European master's degree in the Emilia-Romagna capital, is accused, among other things, of subversive propaganda and incitement to terrorism on the basis of some posts on Facebook from an account that according to his lawyers is not his.

He faces 25 years in prison.
