Los Angeles / New York (AP) - The convicted rapist and ex-film mogul Harvey Weinstein wants to reopen his trial.

Weinstein's attorney Arthur Aidala confirmed to the German Press Agency that the 69-year-old's defense team had appealed the February 2020 judgment to the New York State Supreme Court on Monday.

"Mr. Weinstein was denied his constitutional right to be tried in a fair and impartial jury," says the judicial letter.

The lawyers justified their allegation with an allegedly partisan juror, the alleged bias of the judge James Burke and the influence of a "sensational media coverage".

Overall, the defenders attack the guilty verdict from last year on seven points.

Weinstein's conviction last year marked a milestone in legal history.

In the sensational case that played a key role in triggering the #MeToo movement, the jury believed the testimony of several women against Weinstein's pledges of innocence and despite the lack of evidence.

The ex-producer was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault.

Even the United Nations spoke of a "turning point" in dealing with victims of sexual violence.

Weinstein is currently serving this sentence in a New York State prison.
