The governor of Arkansas (United States) on Monday vetoed a law prohibiting transgender minors from accessing medical transition.

He denounced the text, which he said causes "too much interference by the authorities" in the health and privacy of people.

"The state must not arrogate to itself the right to interfere in all medical, human and ethical matters," said Asa Hutchinson, known for her Christian conservatism.

With this law, Arkansas would have become the first American state to prohibit transgender minors from access to hormonal treatments or operations.

We thank Governor Hutchinson for meeting with and listening to the people of Arkansas, and we urge legislators to allow this veto to stand.

An offensive against transgender people across the country

The ACLU, the American civil rights association, welcomed the news, calling the text "dangerous".

She also called for not letting our guard down, as the predominantly Republican Parliament of Arkansas still has the option of overriding this veto.

This is a rare exception in the ongoing Conservative offensive against transgender minors.

Texts of the same ilk have been proposed in several other American states, including Alabama.

The governor of Arkansas himself recently ratified several bills limiting the rights of transgender people.

The latest bans trans women from competing in women's sports competitions.

Joe Biden has taken a position on the subject, promulgating on the first day of his mandate a decree to “prevent and combat discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation”.
