Gelsenkirchen (dpa) - The acute relegation-threatened Bundesliga soccer team Schalke 04 had to post a major loss.

As the club announced on Tuesday in Gelsenkirchen, there was a loss of around 53 million euros in 2020.

The minus was almost twice as high as in the previous year, when it was 27 million euros.

Compared to 2019, sales fell by around 100 million euros to around 175 million euros.

The reason for the deficit is, among other things, significantly lower audience and catering income - because of the corona pandemic, S04, like all other German clubs, had to play in front of empty stands for most of the past year and is still doing so.

The proceeds from sponsorship also plummeted.

The prospects at the Revierclub are bleak: As the bottom of the table, the miners are facing relegation to the second division, which would have serious financial consequences for the traditional club, which was runner-up in 2018.

The mountain of debt is high: The liabilities increased last year by 19 million euros to 217 million euros.

Schalke's CFO Christina Rühl-Hamers put the corona-related revenue losses at around 70 million euros by the end of this season.
