Bochum (dpa) - Herbert Grönemeyer, one of the most successful musicians in Germany, will be 65 on Monday (April 12th) - and the old homeland also congratulates.

"Regardless of where he lives, Herbert Grönemeyer is and remains a" Bochum boy "for us," says Mayor Thomas Eiskirch (SPD).

The actor and singer is just as connected to VfL Bochum as to the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, his concerts in the Ruhr area always felt like «home games», said the mayor.

Grönemeyer - he has lived in Berlin for several years - had his breakthrough as a musician in 1984 with the album "4630 Bochum".

As an actor, he had previously become known to an audience of millions as Lieutenant Werner in the movie "Das Boot" by Wolfgang Petersen.

His great success as a versatile artist is unusual, says music expert Heiko Maus.

The “Grönemeyer phenomenon” is made up of several factors.

This included "authenticity and adaptability, linguistic, musical and performing talent, local color and the image of a personable, socio-politically committed climber".
