Friedrichshafen (dpa / lsw) - The sudden return of frost worries the fruit growers on Lake Constance.

The sub-zero temperatures would have caused damage to one or the other company, said Peter Triloff from the Bodenseeobst market community in Friedrichshafen on Tuesday.

No information could yet be given about the exact extent of the damage.

Very few companies have systems for frost protection irrigation.

With their help, the plants are sprayed in a targeted manner.

When the distributed water freezes, heat of crystallization is released on the plants, so that leaves and flowers are usually protected from frost damage.

Such systems are expensive and approval sometimes takes a long time.

There are currently around 400 farms with a cultivation area of more than 4200 hectares organized in the market community.

According to the Association of South German Asparagus and Strawberry Growers, the after-frost of green asparagus that is grown above ground may have ruined a day's harvest.

He does not expect major damage to the strawberries, said managing director Simon Schumacher.

The wild strawberries are not ready yet.
