Jena / Erfurt (dpa / th) - The state of Thuringia is open to the demand for protective housing for male victims of domestic violence.

"I think that there must be protective shelters for men in Thuringia in the future," said Thuringian gender equality officer Gabi Ohler of the German press agency.

However, you need a preliminary run for this.

A concept is currently being developed by the men's protection project A4 in which, among other things, the need for advice and support is defined.

The analysis should be available by the end of the year.

"Then we have to talk about the financing and find a municipality that does it," said Ohler.

In Thuringia, shelters, for example for women or the homeless, are currently the responsibility of local authorities.

The male protection project A4 in Jena sees an increasing demand for protective shelters for men who have been victims of violence in their relationships or families.

Last year nine men turned to the Jena consultants about safe accommodation, said project employee Constance Kühn.

In the years before, there were only two or three inquiries.

However, according to Kühn, the number of those who are looking is far greater.

Not all of them would inevitably contact A4, as the project only offers advice.

The Federal Agency for Protection against Violence Men assumes a need for up to five shelters per federal state.

"Due to the lack of shelter in Thuringia, we can currently only refer those affected to Saxony," said Kühn.

For most of them, temporary accommodation in another federal state is unreasonable, as they have their center of life in Thuringia, for example with work and custody of children.

Last year, according to Kühn, 50 men with family experiences of violence were given advice.

That ranges from insults, degradation, extreme insults or a strong control behavior and jealousy of the partner to physical violence.

"The issue of violence in the family is very embarrassing for both sexes, and there is also a social stigma for men," said Kühn.

The A4 project for male victims of violence was launched in 2017.

The association “United Against Violence” is the sponsor.

According to the police, 2311 victims of domestic violence between the ages of 18 and 59 were recorded in Thuringia in 2019.

Of these, 1,774 were women and 537 men.

Last year there were reportedly 2,604 cases of domestic violence.
