Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The climate protection movement “Fridays for Future” has raised seven demands on the coalition negotiations in Rhineland-Palatinate.

To this end, a letter was handed over to the leader of the Greens, Bernhard Braun, on Tuesday, as a spokesman for “Fridays for Future” announced.

Further meetings are planned with the SPD and FDP parliamentary groups.

The demands will specify how the 1.5 degree target of the Paris climate protection agreement can still be implemented, said the spokesman.

"What is negotiated for the coalition agreement will determine the course for the next five years," said chemistry doctoral student Marco Wietzoreck.

"And precisely these next few years will be decisive when it comes to coping with the climate crisis and the transition to a climate-friendly society."

The participants in the coalition negotiations now have the responsibility to “initiate and shape a socio-ecological transformation in Rhineland-Palatinate”.

Companies like BASF, Schott or Werner & Mertz needed the necessary framework and planning security.

The first school strikes and demonstrations of “Fridays for Future” in Rhineland-Palatinate took place in January 2019, after the Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg started her protest in Stockholm and thus received a broad international response.

After a break of several months due to corona, more than 500 people took part in a bicycle demonstration in Mainz on March 19 to demonstrate in favor of a climate-friendly traffic turnaround.

This month, consideration will be given to the extent to which the Corona situation will allow protest actions on the street, said Juan Heidemann from the Mainz local group of “Fridays for Future”.

"We are confident that we will be able to take to the streets again in the near future."
