Bilbao (dpa) - The Tour de France second Primoz Roglic has won the first stage of the Basque Country Tour.

In the 13.9-kilometer individual time trial with start and finish in Bilbao, the Slovenian outpaced all of the competition on Easter Monday and ended up just ahead of Brandon McNulty (USA, two seconds) and Jonas Vingegaard (Denmark, 18 seconds).

The German Maximilian Schachmann showed a good performance and finished tenth, 31 seconds behind.

Compatriot Emanuel Buchmann (47 seconds) did not make it into the top 20.

There are a total of six stages on the racing program for the top-class tour up to Saturday.

Most of the sections are rather hilly, the 111.9 kilometer long final stage from Ondarroa to Eibar is the most difficult.

Roglic is considered the favorite for the overall win.
