Berlin (dpa) - Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn has warned of the continued risk of infection from the corona virus.

"Vaccination does not prevent the third wave, the third wave is growing," said the CDU politician on Monday in Berlin during a visit to the Messe vaccination center.

Countries with a higher vaccination rate such as Chile, Great Britain or the USA showed that contact restrictions are still necessary.

Spahn called the situation in the intensive care units and in the clinics worrying in view of the increasing occupancy rates.

"We have to break this third wave together and reduce contacts," he said.

"Especially in the private sector, in schools, at work, wherever possible."

The minister appealed to the federal states "where there is an incidence of over 100 to consistently implement the agreed emergency brake in order to bring the numbers down".

Regarding demands from the CSU for uniform nationwide rules, Spahn said the goal must be to break this wave.

"Ideally, there is a uniform national procedure."

The mechanism of the emergency brake was agreed jointly.

According to this, counties, regions, states would have to regulate additional restrictions and withdraw opening if the incidence is more than 100.

“That is why the path that is being talked about so much is not decisive.

I think it is much more crucial that it happens, that the emergency brake is applied consistently and that we break this wave sooner rather than later. "

Spahn again campaigned for relief for people who were already vaccinated.

It is about being able to treat completely vaccinated people like those who tested negative.

Distance rules, hygiene or medical protective masks are still necessary for those who tested negatively as well as for those who were completely vaccinated.

"Nobody has more or fewer options than someone else as long as it is made clear that the risk of infection is reduced through testing or vaccinations."
