India

has added more than 100,000 coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, a record increase that prompted its richest state to enforce smart working and the closure of shopping malls and restaurants until April.

Maharashtra, which is home to the financial hub Mumbai and contributes about 15% of the national production, will stop all non-essential services from this morning.

The country - writes the 'Bloomberg' website - reported 103,558 new infections, according to the latest data released by the Federal Ministry of Health.

"There is an alarming rate of growth of Covid-19 cases and deaths in the country," federal government Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement over the weekend.

As the numbers of the infection continue to soar, five Indian states are in the midst of local elections with thousands flocking to election rallies, while northern Uttarakhand marks the month-long Hindu pilgrimage of the Kumbh Mela, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the banks of the Ganges River.

Maharashtra is the epicenter of this new epidemic, which follows a lull in recent months that has allowed companies to reopen and fostered optimism among politicians about a resumption of growth.
