Berlin (dpa) - Almost two thirds of Germans are for a ban on holiday travel abroad in the fight against the corona pandemic.

In a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency, 64 percent were in favor of such a step, only 26 percent are against.

10 percent did not provide any information.

In view of the heated discussion about holidays in Mallorca, the federal government had considered temporarily prohibiting trips to popular holiday areas abroad.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) had commissioned the responsible departments to examine the legal options.

Last Monday it was said that such a step was “not planned at this point in time”.

Mallorca was removed from the list of corona risk areas on March 14 because the number of infections was falling, which had temporarily led to a booking boom for Easter.

Vacationers returning from the Germans' favorite vacation island no longer have to be quarantined.

However, the federal and state governments continue to strongly advise against tourist trips at home and abroad.

The desire for a ban on holiday trips abroad is particularly high among those over 55 with 71 percent.

But there is also a majority in all other age groups in favor.

Among the 18 to 24 year olds it is still 54 percent.
