Queen Noor of Jordan called this Sunday
"infamous slander"
the accusations against her son, the half-brother of King
Abdullah II
and former crown prince
Hamzah al-Hussein
, who claimed to have been confined to his home for having participated in meetings in which he he criticized the Jordanian government and king.
"Praying that
truth and justice
prevail
for all the innocent victims of this heinous slander," said the one who was the last wife of King Hussein in a message posted on her Twitter account.
Noor reacted like this on his social networks after the events that occurred since Saturday afternoon
when several people were arrested
, including a member of the Royal Household, and the Armed Forces assured that they had asked Prince Hamzah to stop "his movements and activities against security and stability of Jordan ".
The Armed Forces denied that Hamzah was detained, but hours later he sent a video to the BBC network in which he
claimed that he had been forbidden to leave his palace
, communicate or meet with anyone, post on social networks, and that they had cut him off internet and telephone.
Hamzah himself claimed that the reason he was given is that he had participated in meetings in which
the Jordanian government and King Abdullah II had been criticized
, although he denied being part of "any conspiracy or any external agenda."
Criticism of the Government
The prince said that several of his friends and acquaintances had been arrested and criticized
"government failures, corruption and incompetence."
Those arrested on Saturday included
Sharif Hasan bin Zaid
, a member of the royal family but unknown even to the Jordanian press;
and Bassem Awadallah, former minister and former adviser to King Abdullah.
Prince Hamzah is the eldest son of King Hussein and Noor, whom the monarch married in 1978 after being divorced from two previous wives and widowed by a third.
When Abdullah was declared king on Hussein's death in February 1999, Hamzah was named crown prince.
However, in November 2014 Abdullah relieved him of his position and appointed his own son, Prince Hussein bin Abdullah, in his place.
