Magdeburg (AP) - SG Flensburg-Handewitt has successfully defended the table leadership in the handball Bundesliga.

Coach Maik Machulla's team won the top game at SC Magdeburg on Easter Sunday with 32:29 (18:17) and overtook THW Kiel (35: 5) with 36: 4 points.

Magdeburg should have left the title race with 34:12 points.

Johannes Golla and Mads Mensah Larsen each scored eight goals in the Flensburg team, who celebrated their first win since October 2011 in Magdeburg.

Omar Ingi Magnusson and Christian O'Sullivan were each successful seven times for the hosts.

After a fast start, there were two serious setbacks for the North Germans.

First playmaker Jim Gottfridsson saw the red card after an attack against Marko Bezjak (21st), then backcourt player Magnus Röd twisted his knee (22nd).

To the relief of the SG, the Norwegian later returned to the field, at least in defense.

The Machulla team was not confused: With the siren at the break, Flensburg took the lead for the first time through Göran Sögard Johannessen.

In the 41st minute, Golla increased to 25:20.

Magdeburg fought and equalized with a 5-0 run.

Mensah Larsen's goal to 32:29 in the final minute sealed the first Magdeburg defeat after 22 unbeaten competitive games in a row.
