Oudenaarde (dpa) - The Dane Kasper Asgreen won the title at the Tour of Flanders for professional cyclists for the first time.

On Sunday, the 26-year-old prevailed after 254 kilometers from Antwerp to Oudenaarde, beating the favored Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel in the final sprint.

Wout van Aert from Belgium, also one of the favorites, was left behind on the penultimate climb.

World champion Julian Alaphilippe from France was also distanced on the extremely demanding course and did not make it onto the podium, which Olympic champion Greg van Avermaet from Belgium completed in third.

The cross specialist van der Poel, who is getting stronger in one-day classics on the road, missed the intended title defense.

The German professional cyclists around classic specialist Nils Politt, who crossed the finish line more than two minutes behind winner Asgreen, had nothing to do with the outcome of the race.
