After their polls crashed, the Union has improved slightly in the Sunday trend of the Kantar polling institute.

According to the Kantar survey for “Bild am Sonntag”, the Union has increased one point to 26 percent.

The Greens stay at 23 percent and are the second strongest force.

The SPD loses one point to 16 percent.

The AfD would stay at ten percent and the Left Party at nine percent if there were general elections on Sunday.

The FDP gives one point and reaches nine percent.

In purely mathematical terms, this would make a traffic light coalition of the Greens, SPD and FDP as well as an alliance of the Greens, SPD and Left Party possible.

The current grand coalition of the Union and the SPD, however, would not have a majority.

Seehofer sees alarm signals

Federal Minister of the Interior Seehofer also responded to the polls.

“We do not currently have more than 30 percent in any survey,” Seehofer told WELT AM SONNTAG.

"This is an alarm signal for me."

The supporters and members of the CDU and CSU gradually wanted to know where to go.

"Immediately after Easter, the personal and content-related questions must be clarified quickly," demanded the CSU politician.

In this situation, the Union needs three things: a strategy, authentic politicians and “a crisp program for the future”.

If that all fits, a party and a candidate for chancellor could fight.

Seehofer left it open whether he preferred CSU boss Markus Söder or CDU boss Armin Laschet in this role.

Laschet, who has been CDU boss since January, and Söder want to clarify the question of the chancellor candidate between Easter and Whitsun.

The federal election will take place on September 26th.

There is no exact date for the decision.

Laschet and Söder have not yet officially registered their candidacy.

NRW Prime Minister Laschet, as head of the big Union sister CDU, is generally granted the first right of access.

Söder regularly emphasizes that his place is in Bavaria - but he is also said to have ambitions for the Chancellery.

Söder has long been far ahead of Laschet in popularity surveys.

Söder also wants to include Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) in the decision.

He told the "Bild am Sonntag" that the decision should be coordinated closely with Angela Merkel.

“Because it has to be a joint election campaign with the Federal Chancellor.

A Union candidate can hardly be successful without the support of Angela Merkel. "

Pollsters from Kantar Emnid surveyed 1,429 voters between March 25 and 31, 2021.
