Justice Nunes Marques, recently appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bolsonaro, has authorized Easter masses and religious ceremonies.

He thus acceded to the request of the association of evangelical jurists.

According to this decision, places of worship must remain open as long as the rules of distancing in times of pandemic are respected.

The subject is very controversial, even within the Catholic Church.

In Aparecida, the main place of pilgrimage for Catholics, Masses were well held.

But in Belo Horizonte, a large city in southeastern Brazil, the mayor upheld the ban on religious services, despite the Supreme Court's opinion.

The bishop of Belo Horizonte rallied to this decision, considered prudent, while the number of victims of the pandemic is exploding in Brazil.

The evangelicals, for their part, expressed their anger: their leader called the mayor of Belo Horizonte a "dumb".
