There are several suspected right-wing extremism cases in the Hamburg fire brigade.

The police in the Hanseatic city reported that several employees had exchanged unconstitutional symbols, the fire brigade announced on Saturday.

"Corresponding disciplinary investigations" have been initiated against five members of the fire brigade with the aim of "resolving the matter consistently and as quickly as possible".

In addition, the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution indicated that an officer of the fire brigade supported right-wing extremists on social media and spread racist content there several times, the fire brigade said.

Disciplinary investigations were initiated against the officer and "an immediate ban on conducting official business" was issued.

"Right-wing extremism has no place in the Hamburg fire brigade," explained fire brigade chief Christian Schwarz.

"We are all asked not only not to look the other way, but to intervene actively, should there be crossings by individuals towards other members of the Hamburg fire brigade or third parties."
