Killed and wounded in suicide attacks on two Somali army bases

At least 23 people were killed in attacks that occurred at dawn yesterday on two military bases in Somalia.

Two suicide bombers, with two car bombs, targeted two army sites in the Odigle district and the village of Barrier in the troubled district of Lower Shabelle.

Government spokesman Ismail Mukhtar said in Mogadishu that "Al-Shabaab attackers carried out a complex attack on two military bases in Lower Shabelle region yesterday morning."

Shortly after the bombings, heavily armed rebels tried to storm army bases.

An exchange of fire occurred when the Somali armed forces said they had killed 19 militants in both attacks.

"We repelled the terrorists who wanted to cause chaos in our army," said Army Commander Abdullah Raj.

Residents also said that civilians were hit by bullets.

The terrorist group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.
