Leipzig (dpa / sn) - The increasing number of corona infections in Vogtland and the Ore Mountains are affecting the Leipzig University Hospital (UKL) again.

As in the second wave, the UKL has now taken over seriously ill patients from hospitals in the southern Saxony region, said the head of intensive care medicine, Prof. Sebastian Stehr.

25 Covid patients are currently receiving intensive care in Leipzig.

At the height of the second wave around Christmas Eve, there were more than 40.

The university clinic shut down its program of predictable operations again last week, said Stehr.

This means that you are well prepared to be able to admit additional corona patients to the intensive care units if necessary.

What worries him, however, is that the second corona wave was not followed by a real valley.

“In other words, the new wave builds on a base of patients who are already there.

That could lead to the point being a little higher this time than in the second wave. "

The patients in the intensive care units are now a little younger than in winter.

The average age has dropped by around 5 to 60 years.

According to Stehr, this could have two effects: the patients will be treated longer, but fewer of them will also die.

About 45 percent of intensive care patients died in winter.

This high rate is due to the fact that the university clinic, as the maximum care provider, treated particularly severe cases.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 350 people have been cared for in the UKL intensive care units.
